Sunday, November 21

Running, 1+ mile, walking, 1 mile, biking, 1 mile. 3 miles altogether, adding it up that's 38 since I started, 28  of them running.

What started as a trail running excursion to Little Sac turned into a hill running session to build some legs and lungs. I had a late start and there were a lot of bikers on the woods side, so I headed to the connecting trail between Little Sac and Ritter Springs. I would later watch some idiot drive his Chevy Tahoe straight down that walking trail. But back to the run. I jogged down the connecting trail to the bridge over Little Sac and stared up the hill. No problem, I eat hills for breakfast. And I had plenty of room left from breakfast. I almost made more room though, because this was a steeper hill than I thought and despite running through the woods occasionally, I remain in not-so-great shape. So I started up the hills and made it within a few yards of the top before slowing to a walk. Phew. I jogged back down and did it again. Made it a little less far this time, jogged back down. Now there was a guy with a dog watching me, asking if I had weights in my pack. Nopers, just water, and only a bit of that. I petted his dog for a bit, noting that once again, the bigger, stinkier and wetter a dog is, the friendlier it seems to be. And back to the hill! By the end of the session I was slowing my pace as much as possible until finally I got up the hill without stopping.

Having that rough a time on a hundred foot climb does not bode well for the Leadville Marathon next year. It has a 3000 ft climb if I recall correctly. I sense a lot of walking in my future. But every easy day is built on a foundation of hard days.

But back to the car, and I noticed a new set of trails cut into the field, so I pulled out the bike and explored a bit. Turns out those trails are from trash dumping. Sigh... Missouri. I hate to end on a down note, so I won't. KITTENS!!!!!!!
