Walking, 2 miles. The total is 55 miles. Know why it doesn't say running? Yesterday's sprain is still somewhat swollen so it's a slower day. I've been bummed to watch my vacation come and go without a car after an accident last week. I'm happy noone was hurt, but there were so many exciting plans for hiking and trail running and time with friends that got put on the backburner. So I've been bumming rides when I can but mostly sitting around the house. Today I got bored and just went for a walk up to the airport and around the park. I would like to move at least one mile a day every day next year, whether it be running, biking, hiking or whatever. Happy New Year to all.

Running, 3 miles. Sprained the bejeezers out of my ankle at the 1.5 mile mark. That's why it doesn't say 5 up there. Trail running, love it. The totals are 46 miles running, 53 miles total.

5 miles of trail running. Yahoo! That makes 50 miles, with 43 of them running. Not exactly lighting up the board during the wintertime.
Took my couch-ridden self out to Fellows Lake to run the 5 mile trail. Let's be honest, I only ran about half and walked the other. Carrying a bit of winter weight here, and the once a week thing is not conducive to speed. However, it was fun. The lake was beautiful, the trail ends at the marina with a lovely view over the water. It was still and blue and love-ely.

45 miles total, with 38 miles running.
Has it really been three weeks? Wow. I could pretend that my interruption of internet was to blame and that I ran a ten miler every day, but I'm honest. I have hardly moved from either work or couch in several weeks of head colds and tv watching. But today, I felt great. And I found a new trail on the NE corner of town, a trail whose location I will never divulge except to those who run it with me. And I got to break in some sticky soled new shoes.
It was a nice three miler on a newly, sort of, discovered unpaved trail with mile markers. Yay. I can now keep track of how far I've run in the woods. I say sort of newly discovered because the first time I saw this trail, it was from the air in an irresponsibly low flown airplane as I scouted out new places to run. Only a year and a half later, I finally drove out to try it.

Walking, 2 miles. Adding it up, that's 47 miles total.
I had originally planned to take a day off and go for a hike up Indian Creek in Arkansas. It's a crazy adventurous hike involving lots of climbing, some wading, and just, in general, clunking around through a small canyon off of the Buffalo. Unfortunately I woke up with a pretty nasty cold and just bummed around the house until after dark when I took a nice walk for two miles. A long leadup for a short walk.

Running, 3 miles. Totals are 45 miles, with 35 miles running.
I spent all Saturday and throughout the day Sunday just not being motivated. It was warm today, but there were 20 mph winds that just wouldn't quit, even after dark. But it was about time to get off of the couch and do something, so I put on some layers and headed out. I spent a few minutes today putting together a 3 mile route on Google Earth that circled around the park staying in the grass and tonight I put it to the test. I missed a turn at one point and got a little off, but went ahead and did all of the portions even if not in order. I'm getting pretty good at off track running in the dark, which mostly means my spine doesn't hurt anymore when I get jarred by surprise holes. All in all a delightful run, and I am now in for the evening with a nice glass of wine and a lazy kitten, and hopefully, will be settling in to watch a trouncing of the remaining non-Chiefs team in the AFC West. Chiefs win, Broncos lose, Raiders lose, now how 'bout those Chargers?

Running, 2 miles. That makes a total of 42 miles since I began, with 32 miles of running.
I was itching to try out some new trail runners, some Sportiva Raptors were my early Christmas present to myself, but I was kind of rushed for time and had to stay local. So on went the normal running shoes and I headed off into the park for a nice easy-peasy two miler with a little walking mixed in, I was a little tired from lifting. Tomorrow I intend to hit the trail to try these bad boys out.
Lessons learned today- until I lose a little bit of weight or stop wearing dark colored running clothes at dusk, people in the neighborhood are going to automatically assume I'm a mugger, not an athlete. Other lesson learned today, no matter how good David Goggins is at endurance sports or blowing sh*t up (he's a Navy SEAL), he is probably much better at making inspiring commercials. Hence his position as a sponsored Navy athlete in triathlons and distance events. I'll see if I can post his commercial here, he's running on a pretty badass trail in this one.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hSNtyYZlFU

Running, 2 miles. The total is 40 miles, 30 miles of it running.
Ahhh, being off during the day is nice. No more stumbling on stuff in the dark when I run. I'm really too heavy for much distance on pavement, so nearly everywhere I run is off of the roads. Off road running + darkness = lots of sprains, so today was nice. That being said, I almost still waited until after dark because I stopped to watch a documentary on the Continental Divide bike race. Those people are crazy. One woman had to drop out after her legs swelled up like giant balloons. No thank you. But the scenery is amazing in the mountains.
But enough of that, it wasn't a long enough run to elaborate much, just a quick trip on the grass up to the airport and back with a lap around a field in Cooper Park. Tried out some new long underwear and now I am pleeeenty toasty. And now off to see if the crowds have died down shopping yet.

Sunday, November 21
Running, 1+ mile, walking, 1 mile, biking, 1 mile. 3 miles altogether, adding it up that's 38 since I started, 28 of them running.
What started as a trail running excursion to Little Sac turned into a hill running session to build some legs and lungs. I had a late start and there were a lot of bikers on the woods side, so I headed to the connecting trail between Little Sac and Ritter Springs. I would later watch some idiot drive his Chevy Tahoe straight down that walking trail. But back to the run. I jogged down the connecting trail to the bridge over Little Sac and stared up the hill. No problem, I eat hills for breakfast. And I had plenty of room left from breakfast. I almost made more room though, because this was a steeper hill than I thought and despite running through the woods occasionally, I remain in not-so-great shape. So I started up the hills and made it within a few yards of the top before slowing to a walk. Phew. I jogged back down and did it again. Made it a little less far this time, jogged back down. Now there was a guy with a dog watching me, asking if I had weights in my pack. Nopers, just water, and only a bit of that. I petted his dog for a bit, noting that once again, the bigger, stinkier and wetter a dog is, the friendlier it seems to be. And back to the hill! By the end of the session I was slowing my pace as much as possible until finally I got up the hill without stopping.
Having that rough a time on a hundred foot climb does not bode well for the Leadville Marathon next year. It has a 3000 ft climb if I recall correctly. I sense a lot of walking in my future. But every easy day is built on a foundation of hard days.
But back to the car, and I noticed a new set of trails cut into the field, so I pulled out the bike and explored a bit. Turns out those trails are from trash dumping. Sigh... Missouri. I hate to end on a down note, so I won't. KITTENS!!!!!!!

Saturday, November 20
November 20, trail running! 7 miles. Let me write that in Spanish. Novembero 20, !trail running! 2000 kilometeros. For a science and engineering guy, I admittedly have a poor grasp of the metric system. And frankly, that Spanish translation doesn't seem right either.
The grand total is 35 miles, 27 of those running.
This was very needed, I haven't been in the woods for a while. I went to Ha Ha Tonka for the long loop across from the park. It was a warm day and at first I regretted the hiking shorts, wishing instead I had brought regular running clothes. Next time if it's warm I may opt to do that and leave the camelbak in the car as well. It isn't that much weight but it bounces around terribly. I started well, and only walked for brief spells on the uphills. My legs felt much better than during the last trail run. Had some Shinedown going, Diamond Eyes. It's like a rock opera with thundering riffs for five soaring minutes and it made me almost run to the point of up-chuckery a few times. Shaved 20 minutes off of my last run at Ha Ha Tonka, which was admittedly the first one of the season, but I'm still embarrasingly slow and so I won't mention my time in public. I would like very much to keep trail running all winter and spring and run in the Leadville trail marathon for my birthday next year. All in all a blissful day of bombing downhills and shooting through the countryside. I love trail running like a crackhead loves crack. It might kill me but I would sell the neighbor's furniture for it. :P

November 16
November 16, running, 2 miles and a little change. What a beautiful evening for a run. Nice and crisp with a bright moon and starry sky above. If it weren't deer season, I might have headed east to the woods on this one. But the park was just fine for a short run. Nothing exciting, just relaxing. My legs are starting to feel good again, rather than just beat up. Of course, not scheduling lifting and running on the same night helps. I think I'll do two consecutive days of each, and plan long trail runs on the weekends.
After one week, the total is 28 miles, 20 of those running.

November 11
I love my time trial bike. I love my time trial bike. It needed saying twice. I only rode 3 miles, and they were 3 of the most horribly uncomfortable miles ever spent on a bicycle. But they were insanely fast. I love my time trial bike. I'm not kidding, I have a mile stretch of Pythian starting at a 4 way stop, and from a stop I can beat cars for that mile. It is a bit downhill though. :P
The running was of course, the exact opposite and was painfully slow as I plodded along the park and ran alongside the airport in the dark. Slow but nice.
Did I mention I am quite fond of this bike?

November 9
November 9th, running, 3 miles. Total is 21 miles, 16 of those running.
I was rushed for time tonight so I hopped over to the Evangel college track. It was a slow run, it was deadlift night and the legs felt like cement, plus I had to pee for like the whole last mile and a half. Not a very big crowd until the last mile when those Evangel undergrads finally emerged, resplendent in their snow pants and hoodies, huddled tightly together against the cold night as the temperature plummeted into the mid 60's, doing everything they could to survive the warm south breeze that cooled my sweaty brow. Every group I passed looked upon me with fear and awe, clutching rape whistles and shooting worrisome glances at the emergency phone in case this maniac with the running shorts and t-shirt and awkardly full bladder snapped and decided to eat them. The track bores me to death, I think the fearful looks of the undergrads as my townie ass runs by are all that keep me awake there.
And now I sit, petting el gato blanco, having finished my run and feasted on my nightly snack of scrambled eggs and hash browns. I'm going to live forever! Good night all.

Human Powered Mileage
It's time to rack up a few miles on these feet again. More details soon.
A couple of summers ago I blogged my human powered miles to see how quickly I could get to 1000. Pretty darn fast in the summer it turns out. Well, this is the other season so let's see how long it takes now.
November 6, trail running, 7 miles. The long trail at Ha Ha Tonka is a local favorite of mine and it was time for an early trail season revisitation. The good? Running into cute trail girls. The bad? Doing that while sporting knee high socks and a running shirt with permanent nipple stains from a couple of seasons of Body Glide. But I'm there to run, and run I did, albeit intermittently. There was lots of walking on this one, and I won't post the time. I will just say that it was more than 50% running, but probably not by much. It's early in the season and I didn't do much this summer. Sue me.
Lessons learned after the run-the frozen custard place in Camdenton has changed their recipe, and not for the better. And even after a couple of years, the radio stations in mid Missouri have yet to grow weary of repeatedly playing Bad Romance by Lady GaGa. I hate to end on that, but I will.
November 7th, run-bike-run, 3-5-1 miles. Total for running is 11 miles, biking is 5 miles, the whole total is 16 miles. Just 984 left to go! Treated myself to a trip out to the unpaved section of the Frisco Highline Trail, which is now some 10 miles further away than it used to be and requires dealing with Willardians. Fortunately it was a Sunday morning and all the good decent folks of Willard were in church like they should be and not on the trail. Saw one runner the whole time. Not much exciting, did a 3 mile run, followed by a 5 mile bike, followed by a 1 mile run with plenty of walking. Heard a lot of bad music. I think Pink and Keysha should fight to the death. Then we shoot the winner and feed her to bears. Now I'm about to relax and enjoy some football. Ah, fall.
November 7th, continued. 2 more miles biking. Had a bit of Chianti in me and went out for a bit of climbing, obviously I went someplace 1 mile-ish away. The details will remain necessarily sketchy. Beautiful evening though, hope everyone enjoyed this wonderful weekend. Total is 18 miles.
